Cocoa Extract

Summary

Cacao, a botanical treasure from Mesoamerica, provides powerful antioxidant defense to the skin. Rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, this ancient extract helps combat daily oxidative stress and contributes to maintaining younger-looking, radiant, and protected skin.

About

Long before it became the chocolate we know today, cacao was revered by Mesoamerican civilizations as a divine gift. The Theobroma cacao tree—whose scientific name literally means "food of the gods"—produces seeds with an extraordinary concentration of bioactive compounds beneficial for the skin.

At LUUM, we use carefully selected cacao extract as part of our antioxidant complex in the Melipona Honey Serum. Its richness in polyphenols complements the protective action of Melipona honey, creating a natural shield against environmental aggressors that dull skin's radiance.

Science

Cacao extract is one of the most concentrated natural sources of polyphenols, surpassing even green tea and red wine in antioxidant capacity. Its flavonoids—especially catechins and epicatechins—act as free radical neutralizers, those unstable molecules that damage cellular structures and accelerate visible aging.

Additionally, cacao's polyphenols promote cutaneous microcirculation, which translates into skin that looks more oxygenated and radiant. They also contribute to the protection of collagen and elastin fibers against enzymatic degradation, supporting the skin's natural firmness and elasticity with continued use.

History

The Mayans and Aztecs considered cacao a sacred substance. They called it kakaw and used it not only as a medium of exchange and ceremonial drink but also in medicinal preparations for the skin. Noble women of the Aztec court applied cacao pastes to their faces to keep their skin soft and protected from the sun.

Mexico's chocolate tradition has roots that go back over 4,000 years. From the first archaeological evidence in the Mayan lowlands to the courts of Moctezuma, cacao has been a pillar of cosmetics and wellness in Mexican culture.

Origin

Cacao originated in the tropical regions of Mesoamerica, from southeastern Mexico to Central America. The most prized varieties for their bioactive profile grow in the humid jungles of Tabasco, Chiapas, and the Yucatan Peninsula, where conditions of humidity, temperature, and natural shade create the perfect environment for developing their richness in polyphenols.

Mexico is considered the birthplace of cacao, and Mexican criollo varieties are globally recognized for their aromatic complexity and superior nutritional density.

Did You Know?

Cacao contains over 300 identified chemical compounds, including theobromine, a mild alkaloid that stimulates circulation. Applied topically, cacao extract can help improve the appearance of tired and dull skin thanks to its ability to promote cellular oxygenation. Ancient Mesoamericans already sensed this power: they believed cacao had the ability to "awaken" the skin and restore its natural vitality.
