Mango Extract

Summary

Mango extract is a tropical botanical that provides visible nourishment, softness, and a feeling of comfort to the skin. Valued for its richness in vitamins and conditioning compounds, it is incorporated into LUUM's formulation to support routines focused on luminosity and daily skin well-being.

About

Mango, known as the "king of fruits" in many tropical cultures, is much more than a delicious food. Mangifera indica produces fruits whose pulp and seed contain a remarkable concentration of vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants that benefit the skin holistically.

In LUUM, mango extract is part of our botanical complex in the Melipona Honey Serum. It works synergistically with Melipona honey and cocoa extract to offer an additional layer of antioxidant protection and nourishment, contributing to skin that looks and feels healthier, softer, and more radiant.

Science

From a cosmetic perspective, mango extract stands out for its contribution of antioxidant compounds, natural sugars, and conditioning components that help keep the skin feeling soft and supple. It is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, three essential antioxidants that work together to neutralize free radicals.

The vitamin C in mango contributes to the visible luminosity of the skin, while vitamin E strengthens the skin's barrier function. Its natural fatty acids—such as oleic acid and stearic acid—provide light nourishment that does not clog pores, making this extract a versatile ally for all skin types.

History

Mango has been cultivated and appreciated in South Asia for over 4,000 years. In Ayurvedic medicine, both the pulp and the seed of the mango were used in skin care preparations, taking advantage of their emollient and protective properties. Sanskrit texts mention it as a fruit of abundance and beauty.

It arrived in Mexico in the 17th century through trade routes between Manila and Acapulco, and found a perfect home in the warm Mexican lands. Today, Mexico is one of the main producers of mango worldwide, and Mexican varieties such as the Ataulfo mango are recognized for their exceptional sweetness and nutritional concentration.

Origin

Originally from South Asia, mango has adapted extraordinarily well to Mexico's tropical climate. The regions of Guerrero, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Chiapas, and Oaxaca produce some of the world's most prized varieties. The warm climate and rich Mexican soil contribute to fruits with a particularly dense nutritional profile.

At LUUM, we select mango extracts that preserve the highest concentration of active compounds, ensuring that each application provides maximum benefit to the skin.

Mango seed butter has a lipid composition very similar to that of shea butter, but with a higher concentration of antioxidants. In India, women have used mango pulp as a natural facial mask for centuries to brighten the face. In addition, the Mexican Ataulfo mango—also known as "champagne mango"—is considered one of the most nutritious varieties in the world thanks to its exceptional beta-carotene content.
